Usually, if your desk is at least as wide and deep as the converter’s base with a few inches to spare. Check four things: the free area on your desk, whether the converter swings forward as it rises, the weight it carries, and whether your desk’s height plus the converter’s lift reaches your standing elbow height.
1. Footprint. Most converters in our desk converters hub have a top of about 80 × 40 cm (31.5 × 15.7 in) — the ERGOMAKER, SANODESK, VIVO DESK-V000K and V000S, and VonHaus; the single-top VIVO V000U is 74 × 45 cm (29.3 × 17.8 in). The FLEXISPOT M57 and Vari Essential 36 are 36 in (91 cm) wide, and the TechOrbits 32 in, without a published depth. Measure the clear area on your desk — after the lamp, speakers and anything else that stays — and compare. The base must sit fully on the desk, not overhang the front edge.
2. Room in front when it rises. Some converters lift straight up; others swing forward in an arc, so the top ends up closer to you and the desk’s front edge as it rises. The three VIVO models state straight-up travel. On a shallow desk, or one against a wall, a converter that arcs forward needs that extra depth in front — check the listing or the product video.
3. Load. Converters carry less than a desk frame. In our hub the tops are rated 10 to 15 kg (22 to 33 lb) — the VIVO V000U is the lowest at 10 kg (22 lb), the V000S 11.8 kg (26 lb), and the Vari publishes none — and keyboard trays about 2 kg (4.4 lb) where they are rated at all. Two monitors on their stands, or one on an arm, can approach that; weigh them.
4. Height. The standing height is your desk plus the converter’s lift. Ours rise between about 16 and 20.5 in (41 to 52 cm) above the desk; on a typical 29 to 30 in desk, that reaches 45 to 50 in. Measure your standing elbow height first — how tall a standing desk should be shows how — and remember the keyboard tray sits lower than the top.
Also check your desk. It carries the converter plus everything on it, often towards the front: a light or wobbly desk will wobble more with the load raised. A glass top may not suit a heavy converter at all.
If none of this fits, an electric desk replaces the desk instead — do you need a standing desk? compares the two.
