Do I actually need a standing desk?

Not if you would rarely use it standing. A standing desk adds a second working position; it does not fix a badly set-up seated one. If you would stand for part of each day, the real choice is between a converter on your current desk and an electric desk — and on this site the two cost about the same.

Start with the seated setup. A chair adjusted to your height, a desk at elbow level and a screen at eye level matter every hour you sit. A standing desk changes none of that; it adds another position to move to. Choosing between a chair and a desk first covers where to spend first.

What it does in practice. It lets you alternate between sitting and standing, so you are not in one position for hours. Some people find that more comfortable; it is not a treatment for anything, and whether a standing desk helps with back discomfort explains why we make no health claim. If you already know you will not stand, it is money spent on a motor you will not use.

A converter keeps your desk. It sits on the existing desktop and lifts the screen and keyboard. The converters in our hub rise to between 16 and 20.5 in above the desk and carry 22 to 33 lb on the top — enough for a laptop or one or two monitors, not much more. Most are priced around $100 to $140, the Vari about $340. It suits a desk you cannot replace, but your desk’s own height becomes part of the standing height.

An electric desk replaces the desk. The whole top moves, so everything on it rises with you. In the electric standing desks hub, most publish a range from 72 to 118 or 120 cm (28.3 to 47.2 in); the OffiGo starts at 78 cm (30.7 in), which is high for a shorter sitter. Only the ErGear and VASAGLE publish a load — 80 and 70 kg (176 and 154 lb) — and the Veken, the one with a US price when we checked, was about $110: no more than a converter.

How to decide. Check your standing elbow height first — how tall a standing desk should be shows how. Then weigh what will sit on top: one screen and a laptop fit a converter; several monitors, a desktop tower or a full desk setup belong on an electric frame with a published load.
