Neither is better for everyone. Mesh stays cooler and supports you like a taut sling; foam feels softer, more cushioned and steadier under the thighs. If you run warm, choose mesh, at least for the back; if you find mesh seats firm or their front edge sharp, choose a foam seat. A mesh back with a foam seat gives you some of both.
How mesh feels. A mesh seat or back is a woven panel stretched over a frame: it gives under your weight and spreads it, and air passes through it, so it stays cooler over a long session. Some people find a mesh seat too firm, or feel the frame at the front edge under their thighs. How it feels depends on the weave and the tension, which a listing rarely describes.
How foam feels. Foam compresses rather than stretches, so it feels softer and more cushioned, with steadier support at the seat edge. It is warmer, because air does not pass through it, and its feel depends on density: a high-density foam holds its shape, a low-density one feels soft at first and flattens sooner.
Our chairs. All four chairs in our ergonomic office chairs hub have mesh backs. The CAPOT and the Yaheetech use mesh for the seat as well; the Marsail pairs its mesh back with an 8 cm (3.1 in) high-density foam seat — the mix that keeps your back cool and gives foam’s support under the thighs.
Changing your mind later. A seat that is too firm can be softened with a cushion: in our seat cushions hub, the AUVON and Healthfix are memory foam and the Cexovo a honeycomb gel that lets some air through. A lumbar cushion such as the Travel Ease adds lower-back support to either type. The reverse — making a foam chair cooler — is harder; a breathable cover helps only a little.
How they wear and clean. They age differently — mesh loses tension, foam flattens; do mesh chairs wear out faster than fabric? covers that. Mesh is vacuumed and wiped; a foam seat’s cover takes stains more easily — cleaning a mesh office chair has the routine for mesh. Choosing between chair styles more broadly?
