Measure the edge at the exact spot the clamp will grip, from the top surface to the underside, and check how much clear space there is under the edge. Then compare that figure with both ends of the clamp’s stated range — a desk can be too thin as well as too thick.
1. Pick the spot. Decide where the clamp will go — usually the back edge for a monitor arm, the side or back for a headset hanger or cable tray — and measure there, not at the front or the middle.
2. Measure the thickness. Hold a ruler or tape vertically against the edge and read from the top surface to the underside. A ruler laid flat on top with a second one held under the edge gives a cleaner reading on a rounded or bevelled edge; calipers are best of all. Write it down in both millimetres and inches — listings use either.
3. Look underneath. A clamp needs to close on a flat surface. Check for a frame rail, a drawer, a modesty panel or a thicker apron set back from the edge: if one sits within a few centimetres of the edge, the clamp’s lower plate may have nowhere to go, even if the thickness is in range. On a standing desk, check where the crossbar and legs sit too.
4. Check the edge itself. Some desks are thinner at a bevelled or routed edge than across the panel, and a glass, hollow-core or very soft top may not take clamp pressure at all — several monitor mount makers exclude glass outright.
Compare with the stated range — both ends. In our monitor arms hub, the maximum desk thickness runs from 60 mm (2.36 in) on the Ergotron to 80 mm (3.15 in) on the Acer and 90 mm (3.54 in) on the HUANUO, which also gives a 15 mm minimum; the Invision publishes none. Smaller clamps vary more: among the headset stands, the Celerion grips 12 to 40 mm, the EURPMASK 8 to 40 mm, and the SIROLISA only 5 to 18 mm — too narrow for most desktops. The Cinati cable tray clamps 0.4 to 2.4 in (10 to 60 mm).
If your desk is out of range. Too thick: a grommet mount through the desktop, or a different accessory. Too thin or soft: a reinforcement plate under the clamp spreads the load. Clamp mount or grommet? compares the two fixings.
