For most people, any published figure from 20,000 cycles up is enough: at two full up-and-down cycles every working day, that is about 500 cycles a year. A higher rating matters if you change height many times a day or share the desk. What matters more is that the listing publishes a figure at all — in our hub, only two of five do.
What the rating means. A lift cycle is one full raise and one full lower. The rating is the number of cycles the maker says the lift system was tested to — a lab test, usually at a set load, not a guarantee of how long your desk will last. Partial moves count for less, and a desk loaded near its limit works the motor harder than one carrying a laptop.
Doing the arithmetic. Two cycles a day, five days a week, is about 500 a year: 20,000 cycles would take forty years at that pace, and 50,000 a hundred. At ten cycles a day — a shared desk, or someone who changes height every hour — 20,000 still means about eight years. For most buyers, the cycle count is a sign the system was tested, more than a limit you will reach.
What our desks publish. In the electric standing desks hub, the ErGear states a lift system tested to 50,000 cycles and the VASAGLE a 20,000-cycle motor test. The OffiGo, the Veken and the Desktronic give no cycle figure. The Desktronic instead states a TÜV-certified motor — certification by an independent testing body rather than the maker’s own claim, though the listing does not name the standard tested.
What else wears out. The motor is rarely the only part that ages: the control box, the hand controller and the cables fail too, and on a wobbling desk it is often the frame. Those parts are replaceable on many frames — see whether standing desk controllers are replaceable and replacing a standing desk motor or crank.
What to check alongside the cycle count. A stated maximum load — the ErGear’s 80 kg (176 lb), the VASAGLE’s 70 kg (154 lb) — and the warranty on the motor tell you more about how a desk will cope with your setup than the cycle figure alone.
