How long do office chair gas lift cylinders typically last?

Usually several years of daily use, with wide variation. A cylinder rarely breaks outright: its seal wears until it no longer holds pressure, and the seat starts to sink. No chair maker in our hubs publishes a lifespan in years — a few publish cycle tests — and the cylinder is a replaceable part.

What wears it out. Each time you sit down, stand up or adjust the height, the seal inside the cylinder works against the gas pressure. The more often that happens and the heavier the load, the sooner it lets gas past. Dropping hard into the seat and sitting on a chair near its stated capacity both add wear.

What the listings tell you. Lifespans in years are not published; test figures sometimes are. In our ergonomic office chairs hub, the Yaheetech names an SGS test report in which its gas spring passed 100,000 impact cycles and 120,000 durability cycles, and the CAPOT states an SGS-tested gas spring and BIFMA X5.1 certification. Those are lab cycle counts, not a number of years — but they show the cylinder was tested at all, which most listings do not.

The signs it is going. The seat sinks slowly while you sit, or drops when you sit down. If instead the seat will not move at all, check the lever first: what to do when a chair sinks explains how to tell a worn cylinder from a lever or mechanism fault.

Replacing it. The cylinder is held by a taper in the base and in the seat mechanism, not by screws. Before ordering, measure its length at the lowest and highest settings and its diameter where it enters the base. The bases in our chair casters and parts hub publish a 2 in center hole for the cylinder, and the Skelang tilt mechanism a 1.57 in (40 mm) socket; the Topdeep kit bundles a cylinder with 5 in (12.7 cm) of travel together with a base and casters for about $66. A new cylinder costs far less than a new chair if the rest of the chair is sound.
