Know which material you have first. “Leather” desk pads come in three kinds, and they are cleaned differently. Genuine leather is a single hide and can take a leather conditioner. Regenerated (bonded) leather is leather fiber pressed into a sheet, often over a core — the Eglooh Mercurio in the desk pads hub is one, on a cellulose core. PU leather is a synthetic coating on a fabric backing and needs no conditioner at all. The listing usually says which; when it does not, treat the pad as the most delicate of the three.
Wipe spills immediately. Most leather and PU pads resist water for a while, but coffee, tea or ink left to dry can mark the surface and seep in at a cut edge. Blot rather than rub, so the liquid does not spread.
Clean with a barely damp cloth. For dust and light marks, water alone is enough. For a real stain, add a drop of mild soap to the cloth, test it on an underside corner first, then wipe with a clean damp cloth and dry the pad with a soft towel. Avoid alcohol, solvents and household sprays, which can dry out leather and cloud a PU finish.
Keep it out of strong sun. Leather and PU can both fade or dry out under prolonged direct sunlight; a pad that sits in a window patch for hours a day will show it first along that edge.
Look after the edges. Raw-cut edges are the part most exposed to hands, elbows and spills; stitched or bound edges usually last longer. When buying, the edge finish is worth checking alongside the size.
Store it flat. Rolling or folding a leather pad for storage can leave creases that do not relax. If it has to be rolled for a move, roll it loosely with the top surface outward and lay it flat again as soon as possible. If easy washing matters more than the look of leather, a fabric mat such as the Gokemuak goes in the washing machine.
What buyers ask us first
Can I use standard leather conditioner on a desk pad?
Only on genuine leather, and only a product made for it. PU (synthetic) pads do not absorb conditioner, which can leave a sticky film; on regenerated leather, follow the maker's care note or test on the underside first.
What causes a desk pad to curl at the edges?
Usually moisture and a thin or soft core. A pad with a firm internal layer and stitched edges tends to hold its shape better than a thin raw-cut one; keeping it dry and storing it flat helps either kind.
What is regenerated leather?
Leather fibers bonded into a sheet rather than a single hide — the Eglooh Mercurio in this site's desk pad hub is regenerated leather over a cellulose core. It looks and handles like leather but should be treated more gently than full-grain: a damp cloth, not soaking, and no harsh solvents.
Is a fabric desk mat easier to look after?
Usually. The Gokemuak fabric mat in the desk pad hub can be wiped and machine washed at 30 to 40 °C, which no leather pad allows; the trade is look and feel rather than durability.
